Elke vier jaar worden in India tijgers geteld. Boswachters en wetenschappers gaan dan op zoek naar tekenen van deze grote katten. Dat doen ze door de duizenden foto’s van wildcamera’s te bestuderen. De strepen zijn bij elke tijger anders. Zo kunnen ze de verschillende dieren herkennen. Ook zoeken de wetenschappers naar pootafdrukken en uitwerpselen. Op die manier schatten ze hoeveel tijgers er in het wild leven.

Honderd jaar geleden waren er meer dan 100.000 tijgers, nu zijn dat er ongeveer 3000. Dat komt vooral omdat het bos waarin de tijgers leven steeds kleiner wordt. De Indiaanse regering heeft nu heel wat maatregelen genomen om deze soort te redden. Het is nu verboden om op tijgers te jagen. Ze hebben ook nieuwe boswachters aangesteld. Zij moeten de tijgers beschermen tegen stropers.
WWF helpt mee met het TX2-project of het tijgerproject. Dertien landen in Azië willen tegen 2022 het aantal tijgers in het wild verdubbelen. 2022 is het volgende ‘Jaar van de Tijger’ op de Chinese kalender.
Het ging lang heel erg slecht met de tijgers, maar nu zien we dat door dit tijgerproject er elk jaar een beetje meer tijgers zijn in het wild. Dat is superleuk nieuws!
